CHAPTER TWENTY

“Once he’d accepted Jordan’s pathetic apology about him knowing all along about the missing children, James lifted himself off the bed and took out a pocketknife from the back pocket of his jeans. It had a magnifying glass, a file, a little knife, scissors, and the attachment he was looking for: a screwdriver.

“Gotcha!” he called out in delight.

“What are you going to do with that James, dig your way out of here?” sniggered Jordan, pointing over at the knife.

“No, I’m not, poo head. If you’d been as observant as I was when we entered the room, you may have noticed the hinges on the door have been fixed to the inside of the door frame. So with a little bit of effort, I may be able to take out the screws, and then we can get out of this dump,” smiled James, making his way across the dusty floor to the attic door.

Standing on his tiptoes, stretching up to reach the screws, James began to carefully peel away the dried on paint and rust, which had built up on them over the years. After an exerted and tricky effort, he eventually

managed to ease all the screws away from the hinges, leaving the door to wobble in its frame.

“Please be careful,” whispered James, while the rest of them were painstakingly unscrewing the last few turns with their small trembling fingers.

Jordan glanced across at James and gave him the thumbs-up sign. James acknowledged him with a friendly smile.

Once all the screws had been taken out, they lifted and dragged the door to one side, resting it against the bedroom wall carefully, as they didn’t want anyone downstairs to hear what they were getting up to.

Satisfied that no one was likely to come up and investigate the noise they’d made, Amy and Adam dashed back to their beds to collect some additional clothing before hastily returning to join the rest of them, as they didn’t want to be left behind. Scanning the inky stairway, the little group of adventurers cautiously and nervously advanced down the long, dark, winding corridor, hopefully to freedom. Jordan and Billy led the way, closely followed by the other three; all were praying they would find a safe passage out of the hall.

Minutes later, after blindly wandering around the numerous undecorated and rundown floors at the top of the hall, they surprisingly ended up back at the entrance to the attic. They all stared at one another, looking totally confused and utterly dejected.

“Jordan, what’s happened? I thought you said you knew the way out of this place,” said James, sneaking a quick look into the attic, ensuring no one was inside, especially Thomas.

“Be quiet, James. I can see what’s happened; I’m not that thick. I need to think this through,” snapped Jordan, glancing back over his shoulder to where they’d come from.

‘That’s it; I can remember now,” cried Jordan, instructing them with a wave of his hand to move closer so they could hear what he had to say.
